Christopher McCarthy:

Having finished my first six in chambers, I felt, going into the second six, a mixture of excitement at being on my feet with my own case load and apprehension about dealing with the challenges of the modern Bar, fortunately 4KBW operates a guaranteed earnings scheme. That being said, in typical 4KBW style, there was always a friendly and collegiate atmosphere around chambers, regardless of call, in which to bounce ideas and get assistance when required.

I started off “wigged and gowned” in the companies winding up court. I stood in a packed court room for the first time and felt the rush of adrenaline and excitement of finally being on my feet. Soon after, I started taking on my first small claims track trials, where I had to put into practice all that I had learnt from my first six. This was a very exciting time and I enjoyed it immensely.

I continued work with a number of members of chambers and with my supervisor. In my view, second six at 4KBW has a great balance of court and paper work with continued training, as you would expect from a modern and dynamic commercial set. Getting to work with other members of chambers enabled me to continue to develop a great variety of research and written advocacy skills, as well as having my own court work case load, in which to develop my advocacy.

As my second six progressed, I was involved in a range of company, insolvency and commercial matters and the continual development of my own practice. 4KBW ensures that “right from the off” you have exposure to the range of chambers’ work. With a very able clerking team headed by Jason and also with the knowledge that the Head of Chambers ensured that pupils are supported in what cases they took on, this enabled me to understand what work and life was like at 4KBW and at the Bar.

A few events particularly stay in my mind from second six. One such memory was winning my first application, the court had been dealing with what can only be described as a troublesome litigant, taking the District Judge through my skeleton argument and getting a result for my solicitors was fantastic.
