Nisali Pieris is an Associate Member of Whitestone Chambers and a member of the Sri Lankan Bar.
Nisali’s areas of specialism include Banking and Finance and Tax litigation.
She also has experience with multinational online platforms having been involved in a case deducing if a social media company could be held liable for infringing Sri Lankan law.
Nisali was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2020.
Nisali undertook an apprenticeship in the Banking and Finance Department at the Tier 1 Sri Lankan law firm Nithya Partners. Nisali has conducted research on the distribution of assets of a defunct solvent company under the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance and international sovereign bonds in Sri Lanka, drafted petitions of appeal and written submissions to the Court of Appeal and Tax Appeals Commission.
Nislai has legal experience conducting research for a senior lawyer on whether a multinational online platform could be held liable in Sri Lanka for infringing national law. She considered the realities of holding such an entity accountable in the absence of legislation directly relevant to online platforms and how other jurisdictions had approached similar problems.
Nisali created and co-hosts 'Legal Geeks', an interview-based video programme addressing legal developments, practice areas and alternative legal careers in Sri Lanka. She initiated this after identifying a gap in legal career development resources targeted towards a Sri Lankan audience.
