AURORA BHRATH:

Throughout our studies as law students, our learning is, for the most part, theory-based. We get a glimpse of the profession during the bar course - but even then, the exams we undertake are an assessment of our memory and understanding, as opposed to the quick thinking and stamina that is required to succeed at the bar. Pupillage is a change from what we’ve known, it’s real life, real consequences and real expectations.

At Whitestone, everyday I was challenged. From the beginning, you are working on cases at an extremely high level and you are expected to perform as needed. Any fear that you have, quickly turns into a determination to succeed and fulfil the belief that was placed in you when being chosen as a pupil.

I had the good fortune of having the Head of Chambers as my pupil supervisor, meaning I was in the High Court during my first week as a pupil. I was not treated as a child, but rather, an equal. Mistakes were quickly corrected and I was always reassured that I was there to learn and with experience comes wisdom.

Many Chambers keep their pupils to assist or shadow throughout their second six. Whitestone believed that the best way to learn was through practice. My second six was a whirl wind. I was in court as counsel at least 3 times a week and I learned how to hold my own. Being in court, undertaking such a huge responsibility, is something that you cannot be prepared for. As much as I was told what to expect and walked through the process, I am so grateful that I was put onto my own two feet and given the ability to learn how to stand through practice, as opposed to theory.

A pupillage at Whitestone will be challenging, you will be pushed to your limits and, by the end, you will be performing at a level that you never dreamed you’d be capable of. I have learned so much and felt taken care of throughout the entire process. Topics that are typically avoided, such as entering the bar as an ethnic minority and as a woman, were discussed at great length - I was made to feel extremely comfortable and considered.

Most importantly, what has been pivotal in my journey so far, is the continuing belief that I have received from both Lawrence and Robert. I have learned to believe in my own abilities. I am grateful to have been awarded this opportunity and happy that I continue to work alongside such a great team.
